Delhi Police have apprehended four men after a video purportedly showing a woman protester being assaulted during the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) protest in the national capital went viral on social media, officials said.
The footage attracted widespread attention after being reposted by several social media accounts, including those associated with the Indian Youth Congress, the All India Students’ Association (AISA) and the CJP.
Posters identifying individuals allegedly involved in the assault were also circulated extensively online, further drawing public attention to the incident.
According to police officials, the incident took place on a stretch of DDU Marg falling under the jurisdiction of the Kamla Market police station.
Police said no formal complaint had been received from the woman or any other individual or organisation when action was initiated.
Officials subsequently received information that the accused were allegedly planning to leave the Delhi-NCR region during the night, raising concerns that they might evade law enforcement. Acting on these inputs, police launched efforts to trace and apprehend them to ensure their availability for questioning and any further legal proceedings.
Officials indicated that further action could be taken during the day. Additional details were awaited.
Meanwhile, Delhi Police have registered more than 20 FIRs in connection with attempts to hold protests forcibly in the national capital, officials said on Sunday.
The cases involve alleged offences including taking the law into one’s own hands, obstructing official duties and assaulting police personnel.
The cases relate to protesters who gathered around Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
