Delhi Police on Saturday cautioned the public against what they described as misleading social media claims alleging that a police constable entered Gurdwara Bangla Sahib wearing footwear, calling the video maliciously circulated and warning that legal action was being initiated.
In a post on X, New Delhi Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Sachin Sharma said the footage showed police personnel walking through a common passage used by devotees to reach the point where they remove their footwear before entering the gurdwara.
“Regarding the video circulated on social media, alleging entry by police staff in Gurdwara Bangla Sahib, wherein some police staff is shown wearing shoes,” Sharma wrote, explaining that the personnel were seen in the passage leading to the shoe-removal area.
He said the process was the same for all devotees visiting the shrine and added that video footage had also been shared to explain the sequence of events.
The DCP alleged that the video had been circulated deliberately to provoke the religious sentiments of a respected community and disturb religious harmony.
“Legal action is being initiated,” Sharma said.
Police Share Jantar Mantar Visuals
Earlier on Saturday, Sharma shared visuals of an empty Jantar Mantar, where protesters opposing Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar had planned to assemble.
“Only for those, who desire peace in the city,” the DCP wrote on X, accompanying the post with footage of the deserted protest site. His message presented the absence of a gathering as evidence of the police’s efforts to prevent a repeat of the unrest reported during a protest at Jantar Mantar in July.
More Than 3,000 Protesters Detained
More than 3,000 anti-CEC protesters were detained across Delhi on Saturday as police imposed extensive security measures to prevent an unauthorised gathering at Jantar Mantar. The planned demonstration subsequently broke up into smaller gatherings at different locations in the capital.
Among those detained were CJP leaders Abhijeet Dipke, Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, who were taken into custody at around 10.30 a.m. at Indira Gandhi International Airport while travelling to Jantar Mantar.
The protesters had planned to demand Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Authorities had denied permission for the demonstration and warned against unauthorised gatherings. Internet restrictions, roadblocks and traffic diversions were introduced amid concerns about a recurrence of the CJP’s July protest at Jantar Mantar, which turned violent.
CJP leader Ajinkya Shinde announced that protesters would march towards Jantar Mantar again on Sunday, saying they would continue their agitation until the CEC resigned.
