In a landmark moment for Punjab’s administrative history, Akshita Gupta has been appointed as Director, Information and Public Relations (DIPR), becoming the youngest officer ever to hold the prestigious position.
The Punjab Government issued the appointment orders on Thursday, entrusting the 2021-batch IAS officer with one of the most significant portfolios of the state administration.
Traditionally, the DIPR post is held by a senior-rank bureaucrat, given the department’s critical role in managing official communication, public outreach, and dissemination of government policies, programmes, and achievements.
Akshita Gupta, an IAS officer of the 2021 batch, brings with her a strong academic and administrative background. A medical graduate, she completed her MBBS in 2015 from Government Medical College and Hospital, before clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination with an impressive All India Rank 69 in her very first attempt.
A native of Chandigarh, Akshita began her administrative journey as Assistant Commissioner (Under Training) in Patiala in August 2022. She later served as Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) at Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar district until March 2025. Prior to her new assignment, she was serving as Commissioner of the Municipal Corporation, Phagwara.
Coming from a family rooted in academics, both her father Pawan Gupta and mother Meena Gupta are academicians. Known for her disciplined approach and clarity of vision, Akshita Gupta’s appointment is being seen as a generational shift in Punjab’s bureaucracy. She celebrates her birthday on October 14.
