Hyderabad, October 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
Hyderabad Traffic Police have seized 100 vehicles allegedly using fake, forged, tampered or unauthorised registration number plates during a special enforcement drive conducted over the past eight months, officials said.
The drive aims to curb the misuse of vehicle registration numbers and strengthen traffic enforcement. Police intensified checks following increasing complaints about fraudulent number plates being used to conceal vehicle identities, evade traffic enforcement and avoid statutory regulations.
During the eight-month period, police registered 100 criminal cases and seized 100 vehicles, including 88 two-wheelers and 12 four-wheelers.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic) D. Joel Davis said the use of fraudulent registration number plates was a serious violation of the law and posed significant challenges to traffic enforcement, crime prevention and public safety.
Such practices could facilitate the concealment of vehicle identities, obstruct investigations and help offenders evade legal accountability, he said.
Davis said vehicle owners must comply with the registration number plate specifications prescribed under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, including applicable High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) requirements.
The use of fake registration numbers, altered digits, unauthorised fonts, decorative lettering, stickers or any modification that conceals or misrepresents a vehicle’s genuine registration number is prohibited.
Vehicle owners must ensure that their registration plates are genuine, clearly visible, legible and maintained in accordance with prescribed legal standards, officials said.
Hyderabad Traffic Police said they would continue targeted enforcement drives against vehicles displaying fraudulent, altered or unauthorised registration number plates. Traffic personnel will maintain strict vigilance to identify violations and initiate appropriate legal proceedings against offenders.
The department said it remained committed to strengthening traffic discipline, ensuring vehicle identification and accountability, preventing the misuse of registration numbers and safeguarding law-abiding road users.
Hyderabad Traffic Police also appealed to motorists and vehicle owners to follow prescribed registration number plate norms and refrain from unauthorised alterations. Citizens were urged to report suspected cases involving fraudulent number plates to the concerned police authorities for verification and necessary action.
