India’s benchmark Nifty 50 index needs to gain around 16 per cent to return to its January 2026 record high of 26,329, according to a report by Abakkus Mutual Fund, highlighting the distance the market still has to cover after its recent correction.
The report said the index rose 1.7 per cent to 22,716 as of September 30, 2026, from its March 2026 low of 22,331.
Historically, the Nifty 50 has experienced corrections of 10–20 per cent on 13 occasions since its inception, or roughly once every three years. It has taken an average of around 91 days to recover to previous peaks, the report said.
The longest recovery period followed the market crash in March 2025, with the index regaining its previous peak in January 2026.
The report also highlighted the importance of remaining invested in equities over the long term. Investors who stayed invested in the Nifty 50 Total Return Index (TRI) from April 2005 to September 2026 earned a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.19 per cent.
By contrast, missing the market’s five best-performing days reduced the CAGR to 10.86 per cent, while investors who missed the 50 best days recorded a CAGR of just 0.66 per cent.
Separately, brokerage Bernstein recently lowered its December 2026 Nifty 50 target to 25,000 from 26,000. It cited the challenging macroeconomic environment, elevated crude oil prices, supply-chain pressures and the absence of meaningful earnings upgrades.
Bernstein also cautioned that reducing long-term capital gains tax alone would not be sufficient to generate sustained foreign institutional investor inflows.
