Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary, reaffirming the government’s commitment to fulfilling his ideals while working towards building a Viksit Bharat.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister recalled Narayan’s influence across generations, his commitment to good governance and his efforts to uplift marginalised sections of society.

“Remembering Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan on his birth anniversary. His appeal transcended generations. He inspired people to believe that public life could be an instrument of national renewal. His fearless voice during the Emergency was also noteworthy. Loknayak JP was also passionate about ensuring good governance and reaching those who are at the margins of society. We remain committed to fulfilling his ideals as we work to build a Viksit Bharat,” Modi wrote.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also paid tribute to the freedom fighter, remembering his contributions to India’s independence movement, rural empowerment and democratic values.

“On the birth anniversary of the great freedom fighter and Loknayak Jayaprakash Narayan ji, I remember him and pay my respects,” Shah said.

He added that Narayan’s life was dedicated to the nation and society, from mobilising young people during the freedom struggle to empowering rural India and pursuing Sarvodaya after independence.

“During the Emergency, his proclamation of ‘Total Revolution’ became the voice of millions of countrymen,” Shah said, adding that Narayan’s dedication would continue to guide future generations.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also paid tribute to Narayan, describing him as a great freedom fighter and a defining figure in Indian politics.

In his message, Adityanath recalled Narayan’s role during the Emergency, saying his voice became a powerful expression of democratic consciousness. He added that Narayan’s fearless struggle and life of sacrifice inspired people to place the Constitution above power, principles above position and national interest above self.

Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary also paid homage to the leader, describing him as a pioneer of India’s freedom struggle and a staunch supporter of democratic values.

In a post on X, Choudhary said Narayan’s dedication to the nation, sacrifices and unwavering commitment to public welfare would continue to inspire citizens.

Born on October 11, 1902, Jayaprakash Narayan was popularly known as JP and Lok Nayak. He was an independence activist, socialist thinker and political leader who became widely known for leading the Sampoorna Kranti (Total Revolution) movement in the mid-1970s against the government of then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
