Chennai, October 10, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Left parties in Tamil Nadu on Saturday called for demonstrations at district headquarters across the state to condemn what they described as the arrest of senior communist leaders and the use of force against activists in Delhi during a protest demanding the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

In a joint statement, the parties accused Delhi Police and paramilitary personnel of preventing demonstrators from assembling peacefully at Jantar Mantar. Describing the action as an attack on democratic rights, they urged their party units and affiliated organisations to mobilise protests immediately across Tamil Nadu.

The demonstration in Delhi was called by the Cockroach Janata Party and supported by Left parties and mass organisations as part of a broader campaign seeking Kumar’s removal.

According to the joint statement, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary M.A. Baby, Communist Party of India general secretary D. Raja and leaders of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation were among those arrested in Delhi.

The parties further alleged that leaders of youth and student organisations, trade union activists and other workers were detained. They claimed several detainees were kept inside police vehicles for hours, criticising both the arrests and the treatment of those taken into custody.

The statement also alleged that police and paramilitary personnel prevented groups from gathering at various locations and detained people attempting to join the demonstration. Security forces were accused of surrounding offices of political parties and mass organisations to restrict activists’ movement.

Citing figures in their statement, the Left parties claimed that 254 trains bound for Delhi had been cancelled, 54 Metro stations had been closed and 35,000 police personnel had been deployed. They presented these measures as evidence of a large-scale effort to prevent people from participating in the protest.

The parties also alleged that the authorities had disregarded the Supreme Court’s observations on peaceful protest. They argued that security arrangements should not undermine citizens’ democratic right to assemble and express dissent.

Holding the Union government responsible for the conduct of Delhi Police and the deployment of paramilitary personnel, the Left parties condemned what they described as attacks on protesters and the detention of political leaders and activists.

They called on party units and affiliated organisations throughout Tamil Nadu to organise demonstrations at district headquarters against the alleged crackdown, while reiterating their demand for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
