BJP-led NDA MPs staged a protest march inside the Parliament complex on Tuesday, carrying placards targeting Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi and accusing the Opposition of avoiding a discussion on police action against protesting students.
The lawmakers moved towards Makar Dwar with posters carrying slogans including, “Grah Mantri ki Charcha se Rahul Gandhi bhago mat” (Rahul Gandhi, don’t run away from the Home Minister’s reply).
The protest followed the government’s assurance that Union Home Minister Amit Shah is prepared to make a statement on the issue. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju had told the Lok Sabha on Monday, amid Opposition sloganeering, that Shah would respond to the students’ protest issue and urged the Opposition to participate in the discussion.
NDA MPs alleged that the INDIA bloc was disrupting parliamentary proceedings despite the government agreeing to a debate. Some lawmakers also raised the issue of police action against students in Jharkhand and demanded a response from Rahul Gandhi.
Their banners included the slogan, “Jharkhand mei chatro pe lathi charge pe Rahul Gandhi jawab do” (Rahul Gandhi should answer on the lathi charge on students in Jharkhand).
BJP MP Anurag Thakur accused Gandhi of “double standards”, alleging that the Congress leader was avoiding the discussion despite the Home Minister’s willingness to respond. Thakur also criticised Gandhi over what he described as silence on the Jharkhand student protest.
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut accused the Opposition of stalling Parliament despite the government agreeing to discuss the “Cockroach protest”, and alleged that repeated disruptions amounted to “betraying” the country.
The confrontation comes as the Monsoon Session enters its final week, with the Opposition continuing its protest over the NEET paper leak and alleged police action against protesters during the July 20 ‘Sansad Chalo’ march at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar.
The Opposition has been seeking the Home Minister’s response over what it has termed police “brutality” against students during the protest.
