Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Tuesday condemned the alleged molestation of a minor girl in Bihar’s Jamui district and said the Central and state governments must find effective ways to ensure women’s safety amid rising crimes against women.
Speaking to reporters in Wayanad, Priyanka Gandhi said the situation had become increasingly unsafe for women and stressed that government schemes and programmes would have little meaning if women could not feel secure in public spaces.
“It’s horrible, and crimes against women are increasing. Crimes against women are just increasing. It’s become unsafe for women. It was always unsafe; it has just become more and more increasingly violent towards women,” she said.
“There’s no point talking about big schemes and programmes if we can’t even ensure the safety of women on our streets,” she added, urging state governments and the Centre to focus on measures that would make women feel safe.
Her remarks came amid widespread concern over the alleged molestation of a minor girl student in Jamui.
According to the FIR, the incident took place late on Saturday evening in the Madwa Pahar area, where the girl was allegedly stopped and molested by a group of youths while returning from the area. A male student accompanying her was also allegedly assaulted.
The incident came to light after a video began circulating on social media on Sunday evening. The district administration subsequently contacted the victim’s family and registered a case.
Police on Tuesday arrested Nandan Yadav, identified as the alleged prime accused, following an encounter in which he sustained a gunshot injury to his leg. He was admitted to a hospital for treatment.
Investigators identified Yadav from the viral video, with police saying he was the youth seen wearing a red gamchha in the footage.
Police have also arrested Ramashish Chaudhary, who has been accused of circulating the video. Five people, including three juveniles, have so far been taken into custody in connection with the case.
Police have additionally registered FIRs against operators of 120 social media profiles across multiple platforms for allegedly sharing the video or disclosing information that could reveal the identity of the minor victim.
