President Droupadi Murmu on Tuesday congratulated the Indian women’s cricket team after the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side clinched the gold medal at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, securing India’s first gold of the ongoing edition.
India successfully defended their women’s T20 cricket title by defeating Sri Lanka in the gold-medal match, repeating their triumph over the same opponents from the previous edition.
Congratulating the team, President Murmu praised its performance and said the players were an inspiration to the younger generation, particularly girls.
“My heartiest congratulations to all the members of Team India on winning Women’s T20 Asia Cup Championship 2026. They played superbly as a team throughout the tournament, winning all the matches. They have done the country proud. They are a source of great inspiration for our youth, especially our daughters. I am sure, they will script many more inspiring chapters of success and excellence,” the President’s official handle posted on X.
The Asian Games triumph comes shortly after India’s successful Asia Cup campaign, in which the team defeated Sri Lanka by 72 runs in the final to claim a record eighth title.
In the Asian Games final, Smriti Mandhana’s 79 helped India post a record 216/3, while Deepti Sharma, Shafali Verma, Shreyanka Patil and Sree Charani shared nine wickets as India bowled Sri Lanka out for 69 to register a 147-run victory.
The win is India’s seventh gold medal in the history of the Asian Games and their first at the ongoing 2026 edition.
The Indian women’s team had also won gold at the previous Asian Games and has now successfully defended its title.
India’s 216/3 was the highest total in the history of the women’s cricket competition at the Asian Games and also the highest score in a women’s T20 final, underlining the record-breaking nature of their performance in the gold-medal clash.
