The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested two senior BSNL engineers in Bhopal for allegedly accepting ₹75,000 each as part payment of a bribe demanded from a Jabalpur-based firm.
The arrested officials are the Chief Engineer (Electrical) and Superintending Engineer (Electrical) posted at BSNL, Bhopal.
According to the CBI, the accused officials had allegedly demanded an undue advantage of ₹2 lakh each for themselves and another accused from the firm, which had undertaken Operation and Comprehensive Maintenance (OCM) and electrical installation-related work for BSNL.
The alleged bribe was sought for processing the firm’s pending bills relating to 14 different works.
After registering the case on Thursday, the CBI laid a trap in Bhopal and caught both officers red-handed while they were allegedly accepting ₹75,000 each as part payment of the demanded ₹2 lakh.
The agency is conducting searches at the residential and office premises linked to the accused in Bhopal, Lucknow and Kanpur.
In a separate bribery case, the CBI arrested a Senior Accounts Officer and two Assistant Accounts Officers of the Regional Pay & Accounts Office, CISF, Ranchi, for allegedly demanding and accepting ₹48,400 from a CISF personnel.
The arrested officials were identified as Senior Accounts Officer Santosh Kumar Mahto and Assistant Accounts Officers Sunil Kumar and Sujit Kumar Singh.
The CBI had registered the case on Wednesday following allegations that the officials demanded money from a Head Constable of CISF, NTPC, Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, for processing and releasing various allowance bills of personnel in his unit, including Travelling Allowance (TA) and Children Education Allowance claims.
The agency laid a trap at the Regional Pay & Accounts Office, CISF, Ministry of Home Affairs, Ranchi, on Thursday and caught all three officials allegedly demanding and accepting ₹48,400. The bribe amount was recovered during the operation.
The CBI is also conducting searches at five locations linked to the accused in Ranchi and Dhanbad. During the searches, the agency said it recovered incriminating documents and cash.
The arrested officials are scheduled to be produced before the competent court on Friday.
