The Kremlin on Monday said the latest US sanctions against Russia would not help restore ties between Moscow and Washington and could hinder efforts to reach a settlement in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said the sanctions were unlikely to contribute to progress towards resolving the Ukraine conflict. He also said Russia had largely adapted to previous sanctions and had found ways to minimise their impact, while its trading partners opposed such restrictions.
US President Donald Trump signed the sweeping Russia sanctions legislation into law on Friday. The measure targets Russia’s energy and defence sectors and its so-called “shadow fleet” of tankers used to circumvent existing sanctions. The legislation also gives the US President powers to impose tariffs of up to 100 per cent on countries purchasing Russian energy.
Peskov’s remarks came as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he and Trump had agreed to meet in New York on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly.
Zelensky said the meeting could be significant for diplomatic efforts to end the war, describing the talks with the US President as important and saying there was “diplomatic momentum”.
“We agreed to meet in New York, and this meeting could change a lot. There is diplomatic momentum,” Zelensky said in a post on X.
He did not announce a specific date for the meeting or set out any agreement that the two sides had reached. Zelensky said Ukraine was prepared to take serious steps towards peace while continuing to coordinate with the US administration.
“The peace track is our number one priority,” he said.
Zelensky said discussions with the American side had covered energy security, food security and the protection of human life, along with possible measures to reduce tensions.
“There are ideas for de-escalation steps and for addressing fundamental security issues – energy security, food security, and the protection of human life,” he said.
The Ukrainian President did not provide details of the individual proposals or a timetable for implementing them, but said work with US officials on the diplomatic track was continuing.
