Chandigarh, September 21, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit leader Giani Harpreet Singh on Monday alleged that institutions established through the sacrifices of Sikh ancestors were being undermined and called for an impartial inquiry into the controversy involving a woman who was allegedly accommodated for months at an SGPC-run sarai.

Addressing journalists after a meeting of the party’s Core Committee, Giani Harpreet Singh alleged that certain people had brought a woman from abroad and provided her accommodation and facilities within an SGPC establishment in an alleged attempt to tarnish his character in retaliation for the December 2 Hukamnamas.

He claimed that the woman had allegedly been brought from Bahrain by a youth leader for this purpose. However, he said the alleged attempt had ultimately backfired.

Giani Harpreet Singh alleged that efforts were now being made to conceal the wider circumstances of the episode by placing responsibility on a single individual.

He questioned how a woman could stay for around six months at a Guru Ghar sarai while receiving facilities without the SGPC president allegedly knowing about it. He said that if the president was genuinely unaware, questions arose over his ability to continue in the post and demanded his resignation.

He also questioned the reported lack of awareness of the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, saying that the incumbent should be aware of developments concerning the administration of the Takht Sahib.

On the action taken against Amarjit Singh Chawla, Giani Harpreet Singh said he did not wish to comment on the decision itself but alleged that it had been taken in haste. He said that under Sikh religious conduct, an accused should first be given an opportunity to present his side.

Referring to Chawla’s position that he had been made a scapegoat, Giani Harpreet Singh said Chawla was currently abroad and had claimed that leaders knew why the woman had allegedly been brought from Bahrain.

He also questioned why the accused was allowed to leave the country despite an FIR having been registered. Giani Harpreet Singh asked why an impartial investigation had not been initiated if the government knew which leaders had allegedly invited the woman and for what purpose.

“We demand that the government constitute an SIT headed by a retired judge and conduct a high-level investigation, because we no longer have any expectation of a fair inquiry from the SGPC,” he said.

Giani Harpreet Singh further announced that district Jathas of the party, under their respective district presidents, would submit memorandums to the Head Granthi Sahib of Sri Darbar Sahib for 11 consecutive days and offer Ardas at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

The programme, he said, would seek the resignation of those responsible for what he described as a reprehensible act.

Shiromani Akali Dal Punar-Surjit General Secretary Gurpratap Singh Wadala, Prof Prem Singh Chandumajra, Senior Vice President Parminder Singh Dhindsa, Sucha Singh Chhotepur, Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Bhai Manjit Singh, Gobind Singh Longowal, Gaganjit Singh Barnala, Justice Nirmal Singh, Davinder Singh Sodhi, Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad, Youth President Gurjit Singh Talwandi, Baba Hardeep Singh, Office Secretary Jagjit Singh Kohli, Media In-charge Tejinder Singh Pannu, Bhagwant Singh Fatehjallal, Ranbir Singh Punia, Gurwinder Singh Doomcheri and Baltej Singh Mehduana were also present.
