An LPG tanker was hit by debris from unknown projectiles while transiting outbound from the Strait of Hormuz, the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said on Monday.
The agency said it received a delayed report from the vessel’s master. All crew members were reported safe and there was no reported environmental impact.
The tanker remained capable of sailing and was continuing towards its next port of call while authorities investigate the incident, UKMTO said.
It was the second tanker-related incident reported by UKMTO in the Strait of Hormuz on Monday.
Earlier in the day, the agency reported that another tanker had been struck by an unknown projectile while making an inbound transit of the strategic waterway. Two crew members suffered minor injuries.
Military authorities informed UKMTO that the vessel was continuing towards its next port of call under its own power. No environmental impact had been reported at the time.
UKMTO advised vessels operating in the area to exercise caution, remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
The latest incident came three days after UKMTO reported that another tanker had been struck by an unknown projectile in the Strait of Hormuz, resulting in a fire onboard. All crew members were reported safe in that incident.
The incidents have occurred amid heightened tensions surrounding maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global energy shipments.
Earlier, the naval forces of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said a “violating” oil tanker attempting what they described as an “illegal” passage through the waterway had been struck and brought to a halt.
According to a statement published by the IRGC’s official Sepah News outlet, the Togo-flagged tanker Trend was stopped after catching fire following the strike.
The IRGC said the vessel had attempted to cross the strait after being “deceived and provoked” by the US Army. It warned that attempts to make what it described as illegal passages through the waterway would have serious consequences.
The IRGC Navy also said its forces remained in control of the Strait of Hormuz and would prevent passage by what it described as aggressors.
