Kolkata Police have arrested six men for allegedly molesting a woman inside a multiplex at a shopping mall in Kasba area of south Kolkata, a senior police officer said on Monday.
The woman, a doctor from the Banshdroni area, had gone to Acropolis Mall with her husband and friends to watch a movie at Cinepolis on Sunday evening when the alleged incident took place.
According to her complaint, the six accused repeatedly harassed her during the screening and allegedly made indecent and sexually suggestive remarks. She further alleged that they attacked her after she objected to their behaviour.
Police said authorities at the multiplex intervened and informed Kasba police station. A police team subsequently reached the spot and attempted to question the accused.
According to police, the six men allegedly argued with the officers and behaved indecently with other people present in the theatre. They were subsequently taken to the police station, where their identities were established from the identity cards they were carrying.
The accused have been identified as Anand Kumar, Suresh Kumar, Arvind Kumar, Srijan Darbar, Manoj Roy and Arindam Ghosh.
During questioning, Darbar reportedly claimed to be a student of Jadavpur University and allegedly threatened police with unspecified consequences if he was arrested. Police subsequently arrested all six men.
“A case has been registered against the accused under relevant sections based on the complaint lodged by the woman. All six have been arrested. Investigation is on,” a senior Kolkata Police officer said.
Police are conducting further investigation into the incident, including the circumstances surrounding the alleged altercation inside the multiplex.
