At least 11 civilians were killed when suspected Boko Haram militants attacked an island in Lake Chad near Ngouboua in Chad’s Lake Province, according to local media and the army.
Army official Moussa Djibrine said the militants arrived by canoe on Sunday and opened fire on civilians who were fishing. Seven men and four women were killed in the attack.
After soldiers were alerted, security forces launched a pursuit operation and killed nine of the attackers, Djibrine said.
Chad’s Lake Province, which borders Nigeria, Niger and Cameroon, is frequently targeted by Boko Haram and other jihadist groups operating in the Lake Chad basin.
The latest attack comes amid a series of deadly incidents attributed to Boko Haram in the wider region.
Last week, at least 13 civilians were killed and another injured in an overnight attack in Cameroon’s Far North region. The incident took place between 1 a.m. and 2 a.m. local time on Thursday in Madegoua, in the Makary subdivision of the Logone-et-Chari division.
An official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said militants entered the locality while residents were asleep and killed 13 people. The lone survivor was taken to a local hospital for treatment.
Local municipal authorities said the attack was believed to be a reprisal after security forces seized a large quantity of ammunition intended for Boko Haram fighters several months earlier.
In August, suspected Boko Haram fighters also killed at least eight people and injured another in an overnight attack on Kangaleri village in Cameroon’s Mayo-Sava division.
The August 7 attack took place at around 11 p.m., when gunmen entered the village under cover of darkness. Six people were killed at the scene, while three others were seriously injured. Two of the injured later died in hospital.
