Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday said security forces had dismantled the alleged ISI-backed Shahzad Bhatti Network (SBN) ahead of Independence Day and foiled its plans to carry out subversive attacks, with more than 200 operatives arrested during coordinated operations across 14 states.
In a post on X, Shah said the operations demonstrated India’s “zero-tolerance” approach towards terrorism.
“Modi govt destroyed the ISI-backed terror group Shahzad Bhatti Network ahead of Independence Day and thwarted its plans for subversive attacks by arresting more than 200 operatives,” the Home Minister said.
He said Indian security forces conducted coordinated operations at multiple locations across 14 states to dismantle the network.
Shah said substantial quantities of suspected terror-related material were recovered during the operations, including improvised explosive devices (IEDs), grenades bearing Pakistan Ordnance Factory markings, pistols, live cartridges and CCTV cameras allegedly used for espionage.
“The network was involved in several terrorist activities,” he said.
The announcement comes against the backdrop of recent arrests in connection with the Shahzad Bhatti case. In late July, the West Bengal Special Task Force (STF) arrested two alleged key suspects in a Pakistan-linked terror and espionage module — suspected Jaish-e-Mohammed operative Mohammad Hamim Mondal and his associate Arpita Sarkar.
According to officials, the SBN allegedly targeted family members of at least six serving West Bengal Cabinet ministers through Sarkar. Investigators have alleged that SBN handlers maintained regular contact with her through encrypted communications on various social media platforms.
The West Bengal STF has since expanded its investigation into connected surveillance and espionage networks in the region. The probe includes examination of seized digital devices and international communication links.
