Amid drought-like conditions and growing concerns over crop losses in Maharashtra, Deputy Chief Minister and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) president Sunetra Pawar has directed party ministers, guardian ministers, MPs, MLAs, former legislators and key office-bearers to visit farmers’ fields and assess the situation on the ground.
Pawar asked NCP leaders to meet affected farmers, understand their grievances, inspect crop damage and coordinate with the administration to ensure timely assistance. The directions come as prolonged dry spells have put standing crops under stress in several parts of the state.
“When farmers are facing adversity, it is our duty to stand firmly by them. Visit their fields, hear their concerns, reassure them, and make every effort to secure the necessary state support for them,” Pawar said.
She also directed party representatives to ensure that farmers’ complaints are formally submitted to the administration and that panchnamas, or official crop-damage assessment reports, are prepared. Leaders have been asked to follow up with authorities on relief measures and remain accessible to affected cultivators.
Pawar further urged party workers to reassure farmers that the NCP would stand with them during the difficult period.
The NCP’s field-level outreach comes a day after the party postponed its state-level Chintan Shivir scheduled for September 27 in Nashik, citing the drought-like situation prevailing in parts of Maharashtra. The party said holding an organisational gathering at a time when farmers and residents were facing difficulties was not appropriate.
The Chief Minister and state government have also been reviewing the situation, with crop assessments and preparations for possible relief measures underway. Recent reports have highlighted rainfall deficits and stress on crops in several regions of Maharashtra.
On Wednesday, Pawar also visited Mumbai’s Lalbaugcha Raja and offered prayers for farmers affected by the crisis. According to a statement from her office, she prayed for adequate water, healthy crops, favourable rainfall and prosperity for farmers.
The NCP leadership’s latest instructions put the focus on direct assessment of crop losses, preparation of official damage reports and coordination with government authorities to facilitate relief for affected farmers.
