India’s domestic air passenger traffic declined 6.34 per cent year-on-year to 1.21 crore in August, according to data released by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on Wednesday.
The data showed mixed movements in the market shares of major airlines during the month, with IndiGo and SpiceJet registering declines while the Air India group gained ground.
IndiGo’s market share fell to 65 per cent in August from 67.4 per cent in July. Despite the decline, it remained the largest domestic carrier, flying 78.87 lakh passengers during the month.
The Air India group increased its market share to 26.7 per cent from 24 per cent in July, carrying 32.32 lakh passengers in August.
Akasa Air retained its 5.5 per cent market share and remained the third-largest carrier, with 6.68 lakh passengers.
SpiceJet’s market share declined to 1.2 per cent from 1.6 per cent in July, while the airline carried 1.40 lakh passengers in August. It has faced several operational challenges this month, resulting in flight delays.
In terms of on-time performance, IndiGo recorded the highest figure among major airlines at 91 per cent, followed by Akasa Air at 90.5 per cent. The Air India group stood at 83.9 per cent, while Alliance Air reported an on-time performance of 71.8 per cent.
Meanwhile, Civil Aviation Minister K. Ram Mohan Naidu said on Tuesday that the DGCA was closely monitoring SpiceJet’s financial and operational performance amid continuing challenges faced by the airline.
Naidu said the aviation regulator had been tasked with reviewing both the airline’s operations and financial position to ensure that aviation safety was not compromised.
