The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday accused Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi of using student protests to advance a political agenda, while asserting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah was prepared to respond to the Opposition’s questions in Parliament.
The remarks came amid continued disruptions in both Houses, with Opposition members demanding a response from Shah over alleged police action against protesters during the July 20 “Sansad Chalo” march.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju said the government had offered a detailed discussion on the students’ protest and had prepared its response, including that of the Home Minister.
“Yesterday, we had offered that the Union government is ready for a detailed discussion on whatever happened regarding the students’ protest, and we had also prepared the response,” Rijiju told reporters after both Houses were adjourned for the day amid Opposition sloganeering.
He alleged that the Opposition prevented the proposed discussion from taking place and walked out instead.
Rijiju said the government was willing to hold a full-fledged discussion, even over two days, and respond to every issue raised by the Opposition concerning the protests.
Union Minister Giriraj Singh also accused the Opposition of deliberately disrupting parliamentary proceedings despite repeated assurances that the government was ready for a debate. He alleged that the Opposition was interested in creating “ruckus” rather than seeking answers.
Singh also targeted the Congress over the student protests in Jharkhand, accusing Rahul Gandhi of adopting “double standards”. He challenged Gandhi to either withdraw support from the JMM-led Jharkhand government, seek Chief Minister Hemant Soren’s removal, or resign as Leader of the Opposition.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya alleged that the Opposition was using students as a “front” to pursue its political agenda. He said disrupting Parliament amounted to destructive politics and urged political parties not to politicise student-related issues.
“Stop doing politics as per your convenience and stop using students as fodder for your politics,” Surya said, referring to Gandhi.
