Birbhum Police on Monday arrested retired government official Rabiul Islam for his alleged links to absconding stone quarry owner Tulu Mondal, also known as Mohammad Nazibuddin, in a case involving illegal quarry operations and alleged accumulation of illicit wealth.
Islam, a former deputy district land and land reforms officer of Birbhum, retired earlier this year. Police arrested him after a raid conducted on the intervening night of Sunday and Monday. His name figures in the charge sheet filed on October 13, which names 12 accused. Eleven have been arrested so far, while the alleged main accused, Tulu Mondal, remains absconding.
Islam is expected to be produced before a court in Suri on Monday, where the prosecution will seek his police custody.
This is the second arrest of a land revenue official in the case. On October 4, police arrested Sabyasachi Mondal, the then block land revenue officer of Mohammadbazar. He was subsequently sent to judicial custody.
Police have also seized assets worth around Rs 220 crore in cash and gold allegedly belonging to Tulu Mondal, his relatives and associates. According to the police, the relatives and associates told investigators that the assets belonged to Tulu and had been kept at their residences under pressure from him.
The investigation is continuing, with police examining the alleged involvement of administrative officials and other associates.
