A Bangladesh court on Monday ordered that former lawmaker and Awami League leader B M Mozammel Haque be shown arrested in an attempted murder case linked to the July 2024 protests in Dhaka’s Bhatara area, local media reported.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order after hearing an application filed by Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, the investigating officer. The complainant, Shamim Mia, alleged that he sustained four bullet wounds during a demonstration on July 19, 2024. He later filed an attempted murder case against several people, including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Haque was named in the initial FIR.
The development comes amid an ongoing crackdown on Awami League leaders and activists. Last week, the body of Yunus Al Murshed, a 48-year-old local party leader, was recovered from the Louhajang River in Tangail district after he went missing while fishing. His family alleged foul play, citing injury marks on his body.
The Awami League described Murshed’s death as part of what it called “ongoing mass killings” targeting party members. In a statement, the party alleged that his eyes had been gouged out and criticised the police for making no arrests. It also accused international bodies and Western democracies of failing to acknowledge or condemn such killings.
