Kolkata Police has summoned Averi Sen, daughter of former West Bengal minister Indranil Sen, for questioning in the alleged fake Durga Puja pass scam. She has been asked to appear at the police headquarters, Lalbazar, on Monday.
Indranil Sen, a singer-turned-politician and former Minister of State for Information and Cultural Affairs, is in police custody following his arrest in the case. His wife, Madhuchhanda Sen, who owns Mass Art, the firm through which the allegedly fake UNESCO-tagged passes were sold, was questioned last week after securing anticipatory bail. The Calcutta High Court had rejected a similar plea by Indranil Sen.
An investigating officer said the preliminary inquiry indicated that part of the money generated through the alleged sale of fake passes had been transferred to Averi Sen’s bank account. Police said her questioning was necessary to trace the proceeds. Mass Art senior official Dhrybojyoti Bose is also under scrutiny.
A police source said Indranil Sen is scheduled to be produced before a city court again on November 10. The questioning of his wife and daughter is part of efforts to collect evidence during the investigation.
The Kolkata Police and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) are conducting parallel probes into the multi-crore alleged scam. The ED initiated its investigation based on an FIR registered against Indranil Sen and others. He was arrested by Kolkata Police last week after leaving the ED’s Salt Lake office, where he had been questioned.
A state government-appointed judicial inquiry committee, headed by retired Calcutta High Court judge Justice Biswajit Basu, is also examining allegations against Sen, including alleged irregularities in the tendering process during his ministerial tenure.
