The Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) has urged Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu to designate official protest sites on the outskirts of the national Capital, citing repeated disruptions to business and public life.
In a letter dated November 2, CAIT National President B.C. Bhartia said protests and political activities over the past month had affected markets, businesses, traffic and livelihoods.
“While the right to peaceful protest is an integral part of our democratic framework and must be respected, it is equally important that the exercise of this right does not result in the infringement of the rights and livelihoods of other citizens,” the letter stated.
CAIT added, “The right to protest cannot become a right to paralyse the city, just as the right to conduct business cannot be sacrificed in the exercise of democratic freedoms.”
The traders’ body said road blockages and traffic diversions had affected traders, shopkeepers, street vendors, transport operators, daily-wage earners and delivery workers. It also claimed that restricted access to commercial areas had discouraged business visitors from other parts of the country, disrupting transactions and supply chains.
CAIT proposed designated protest locations, protection of commercial areas, a transparent mechanism for demonstrations, safeguards for daily livelihoods and better coordination among Delhi Police, traffic police, MCD and other agencies.
Clarifying that it was not seeking to curtail democratic rights, CAIT urged the L-G to examine the proposal and notify suitable protest sites on Delhi’s outskirts.
