Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav on Monday announced Rs 1 crore financial assistance and a compassionate appointment as Sub-Inspector for the wife of police officer Dilip Puri, who was killed by a truck allegedly carrying illicit liquor in Dewas district.
Yadav also ordered a fair investigation and strict action against those responsible. Special DGP Upendra Jain has been sent to the spot to supervise the probe.
The incident occurred late Sunday night on the Harda-Nemawar highway when Puri, the Khategaon police station in-charge, was trying to intercept a suspected liquor-smuggling truck. The vehicle allegedly ran over him, leaving him critically injured. He later died at a hospital.
Dewas SP Aditya Mishra said around five police teams had been formed to verify intelligence inputs about the suspected illegal liquor transportation. Police have seized the truck and arrested its driver. Further investigation is underway to trace the liquor’s source, destination and other possible links in the alleged smuggling network.
Puri, a 2007-batch Sub-Inspector, was given a tearful farewell in Dewas before his mortal remains were sent to his ancestral village in Dhar district.
Chief Minister Yadav and Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan paid tributes to the officer, describing his death as a tragic loss in the line of duty.
