Chandigarh, November 2, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Monday received a major boost ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, with the Bharatiya Kisan Union (Kadian) announcing unconditional support to the party.
The announcement was made by BKU (Kadian) President Harmeet Singh Kadian at a press conference at the SAD headquarters in Chandigarh, where he was accompanied by SAD President Sukhbir Singh Badal.
Explaining the decision, Harmeet Singh Kadian said the union had conducted a three-month exercise and approached all political parties before deciding to extend its support to the SAD. He said the union found that, apart from the SAD, other parties did not have a pro-farmer policy agenda.
Kadian criticised the previous Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) governments over their handling of farmers’ issues. He alleged that the AAP government had reneged on a written agreement with the union and cited the arrest of farmers and alleged theft of trolleys belonging to workers of a farmers’ organisation by AAP leaders.
He also accused the state government of failing to provide promised compensation to farmers who suffered losses during last year’s floods and hailstorms more than six months ago.
“Considering all this, we feel that a regional party like the SAD which upholds Sri Akal Takht Sahib, can alone safeguard the interests of the farmers of Punjab,” Kadian said.
He said the union had submitted a memorandum to Sukhbir Singh Badal, outlining several demands, including the reopening of the Attari-Wagah border for trade with Central Asian countries, promotion of crop diversification and food processing, and extension of the Minimum Support Price (MSP) to more crops beyond wheat and paddy.
The memorandum also sought crop insurance and measures to prevent outsiders from purchasing land in Punjab.
Thanking BKU (Kadian) for extending its support, Sukhbir Singh Badal appealed to all farmers’ and labourers’ organisations to back the SAD.
Badal recalled that Harmeet Singh Kadian’s father, S. Partap Singh Kadian, who founded the BKU, had also served as an SAD legislator in 1968.
He assured the union that all the issues raised in its memorandum would be taken up for resolution if the SAD formed the government in 2027.
Badal also said the SAD remained committed to farmers’ welfare and asserted that no other political party had done as much for the farming community.
Harmeet Singh Kadian, meanwhile, called upon all pro-Punjab farmers’ organisations to extend their support to the SAD.
