Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday warned Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar that the Opposition would continue its campaign against him until he resigned, asserting that even if he went underground, the people would find him.
Kharge made the remarks while addressing the INDIA bloc’s ‘Dilli Chalo’ rally at Ramlila Maidan, organised to demand Kumar’s resignation over alleged electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Describing the gathering as a historic meeting, the Congress chief accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah of attempting to deprive youth, women and minorities of their voting rights.
“We have gathered here to ensure the resignation of Gyanesh Kumar. We won’t settle down until he resigns and will keep on fighting,” Kharge declared, accusing the Prime Minister and Home Minister of protecting the Chief Election Commissioner.
“Even if he tries to hide underground, we will bring him out from there. Our youth and women possess that strength,” he said.
Taking direct aim at PM Modi, Kharge asserted that the Opposition would not be intimidated by police action or central investigative agencies such as the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
He further alleged that the ruling establishment was manipulating electoral processes and claimed that governments in Maharashtra, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh had come to power through “vote theft”.
Calling for a united Opposition campaign, Kharge said democracy could be protected only after Modi was removed from power, adding: “Modi ko hatao, Loktantra Bachao.”
Earlier, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said the INDIA bloc’s protest was aimed at protecting the constitutional rights of citizens rather than advancing the interests of any political party.
Speaking ahead of the rally, Tharoor questioned the deletion of what he described as 130 million voters from electoral rolls and called for a completely clean voters’ register.
“This is not about parties, this is not about Congress, this is about the very simple message that the constitutional rights of the Indian people should not be taken away by the Election Commission,” he said.
Tharoor maintained that the Opposition was seeking to safeguard the voting rights of people across the country.
