Hollywood actress Salma Hayek has paid tribute to pioneering American labour leader and civil rights activist Dolores Huerta, remembering her lifelong struggle for justice, equality and the rights of agricultural workers.
Huerta died on October 28, 2026, at the age of 96. Hayek shared two videos and a photograph with the activist on Instagram on Thursday, accompanying them with a heartfelt note recalling their meeting and Huerta’s contribution to society.
“Six years ago I asked God to let us keep the gift of you for another century. We got 96 years of you fighting for us, for justice, for equality, for dignity,” Hayek wrote.
Describing Huerta as a legendary civil rights leader and a champion of undocumented and Latin American workers in the United States, the actress said she would always remember the day they met.
Hayek added that the best way to honour Huerta’s legacy was to continue the work she had inspired, particularly by standing up for underrepresented communities and using her influence to support causes that matter.
Born in Dawson, New Mexico, Huerta grew up in Stockton, California, where she witnessed the challenges faced by working-class families. After working briefly as a schoolteacher, she turned to community organising and became a leading voice in the farmworkers’ rights movement.
In 1962, she co-founded the National Farm Workers Association with labour organiser Cesar Chavez. The organisation later became the United Farm Workers (UFW).
Huerta played a key role in the 1965 Delano grape strike and the nationwide grape boycotts, campaigns that sought better wages and working conditions for agricultural labourers. She also popularised the rallying cry “Si, se puede” (Yes, we can).
Her activism extended to women’s rights, immigrant rights and broader social justice issues. In recognition of her contribution to the country, she was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2012.
