Pramila Jayapal, Jamie Raskin Seek Records of Federal Officers Involved in Immigration Shootings

Washington, October 29, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Indian-American Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal and fellow Democrat Jamie Raskin have demanded personnel, disciplinary and service records of federal officers involved in shootings during immigration-enforcement operations, giving the Trump administration until November 10 to respond.

In a letter addressed to Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin, acting Immigration and Customs Enforcement Director David Venturella and Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott, the lawmakers sought details of officers’ service histories, complaints, criminal and civil court records, involvement in other shootings, and any training or disciplinary action taken after they used their weapons.

Jayapal’s office said the request followed concerns about officers’ conduct during and after shootings, including allegations that some had misrepresented incidents or boasted about using lethal force.

The lawmakers cited figures indicating that federal immigration agents had shot at least 25 people since Donald Trump returned to the White House, killing six, including three US citizens. The figures were presented by the lawmakers and were not described as an independently verified government tally.

They argued that the scale of federal spending on immigration enforcement made transparency about officers’ conduct essential to public accountability.

“It owes the taxpayers and this Congress transparency and accountability for what it is doing with our money,” the lawmakers wrote.

Among other questions, they asked whether officers involved in shootings had been placed on leave and what additional training or disciplinary measures had followed each incident. The letter is an oversight request and does not establish misconduct or announce findings against any officer.

One case cited by Jayapal’s office involved Marimar Martinez, a Chicago woman who was shot five times by a Border Patrol agent. An ABC News visual investigation published in February reported that body-camera and surveillance footage appeared to contradict parts of the Department of Homeland Security’s initial account, which said agents had fired defensively after their vehicle was rammed and surrounded.

ABC reported that the footage did not show a vehicle ramming the agents’ vehicle. The criminal case against Martinez was later dismissed after the Justice Department sought its dismissal. CBP had said the officer involved was placed on administrative leave and that significant uses of force were subject to internal and inter-agency review.

The latest demand follows an October 15 Democratic field hearing in Austin on immigration-agent shootings in Texas, attended by Jayapal, Congressman Greg Casar, House Homeland Security Committee ranking Democrat Bennie Thompson and other lawmakers.

Jayapal represents Washington state’s 7th Congressional District and serves as the senior Democrat on the House immigration oversight subcommittee. Raskin is the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee.
