Patiala, October 30, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Punjab has recorded 1,007 stubble-burning incidents during the ongoing paddy harvesting season, with Tarn Taran alone accounting for nearly 39 per cent of the reported cases, according to the latest district-wise data released by the Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB).

Tarn Taran topped the list with 397 incidents, followed by Amritsar with 171 and Ferozepur with 104. Together, the three districts accounted for 672 cases, or around two-thirds of the state total.

Gurdaspur reported 72 incidents and Kapurthala 63. The figures for other districts included Bathinda (31), Fazilka (28), Jalandhar (22), Faridkot (21), Patiala (16), Hoshiarpur and Sangrur (12 each), and Fatehgarh Sahib (11).

Muktsar recorded nine cases, while Moga, Barnala and SAS Nagar reported seven each. Ludhiana had six incidents, Malerkotla five, SBS Nagar three, Rupnagar two and Pathankot one. No incident was reported from Mansa.

The PPCB report said officials had inspected 778 of the 1,007 reported locations and confirmed stubble burning at 379. Another 26 fields were found to have traces of burning by PPCB and nodal officers.

Environmental compensation was imposed in 349 cases, with penalties totalling ₹17.50 lakh. Of this amount, ₹13.15 lakh had been recovered. Authorities also registered 246 FIRs and made red entries in the revenue records of 297 fields. A total of 426 warnings and show-cause notices were issued to nodal and supervisory officers.

The report showed no prosecution action under Section 14 of the Commission for Air Quality Management Act, no chargesheets filed and no officials suspended.

In Patiala, 16 incidents were reported. Officials inspected 14 locations and confirmed burning at seven. Environmental compensation of ₹35,000 was imposed in six cases, of which ₹20,000 was recovered.

The figures are cumulative for the season up to October 29 and do not provide a separate district-wise count of incidents during the preceding 24 hours. The data therefore does not establish which district recorded the most recent cases.
