Two youths sustained serious injuries after unidentified assailants opened fire near Tara Wala Bridge in Amritsar on Thursday evening, in another shooting incident reported in Punjab. Police suspect that the attack stemmed from an old personal rivalry.
According to police, the victims have been identified as Sharanjit Singh and Akashdeep Singh, both reportedly aged between 25 and 30 and residents of Kotli Sakka village in Ajnala, Punjab.
The two men were travelling on a motorcycle to pay obeisance at a religious place when they were allegedly attacked by around six youths waiting near the bridge, investigators said.
During the attack, Sharanjit Singh sustained one bullet injury, while Akashdeep Singh was hit by two bullets. The assailants fled immediately after the shooting.
After receiving information about the incident, police personnel rushed to the spot and shifted the injured men to a nearby hospital for treatment.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Ravinder Pal Singh Sandhu said that three empty cartridge cases were recovered from the scene, suggesting that approximately three rounds had been fired.
Ruling out a gang-war angle, the ACP said the incident appeared to have resulted from an old personal rivalry between the two groups.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the parties had been involved in a serious altercation, including a violent assault, two to three years ago.
Police have identified two key suspects and are conducting raids at possible hideouts to trace the remaining accused. Further investigation into the case is underway.
In a separate incident, two masked men allegedly opened fire at the room of a preacher inside Gurdwara Manji Sahib in Rajowal Kalan village in the Raikot area of Punjab’s Ludhiana district early Wednesday morning, NDTV reported.
The incident occurred at around 3 a.m., days after another similar firing incident was reported in the district.
Fortunately, the preacher was not in his room at the time of the attack, and no injuries were reported.
According to officials, the two men entered the Gurdwara Manji Sahib premises with their faces covered by cloth. After entering the complex, they allegedly took out pistols and fired directly at the room of preacher Baba Baldev Singh.
The bullets struck the door and walls of the room, with one projectile piercing the glass fitted in the door. The accused fled the scene after carrying out the attack, police said.
