Actress Sonia Balani, known for her role in The Kerala Story, is set to portray Urmila, the wife of Lakshmana, in filmmaker Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming two-part adaptation of the Ramayana. The actor says taking on the character is both a privilege and a responsibility.
Speaking about the role, Sonia described the epic as a story deeply rooted in Indian culture and said Urmila’s strength, dignity and sacrifices deserved greater recognition.
“Being associated with a story as timeless and deeply rooted in our culture as the Ramayana is truly special. Urmila is a character whose strength, dignity and sacrifices deserve to be understood beyond the pages of history. As an actor, the opportunity to explore such an emotionally layered character is both a privilege and a responsibility,” she said.
Sonia also expressed excitement about working with Tiwari and sharing the screen with Ranbir Kapoor, who plays Lord Rama in the film.
“Working with a visionary filmmaker like Nitesh Tiwari and sharing the screen with an accomplished actor like Ranbir Kapoor in a project of this scale makes the journey even more exciting. I hope audiences connect with Urmila’s strength and discover the beautiful human emotions that make her story so powerful,” she added.
Urmila’s story is closely associated with sacrifice and resilience. Her portrayal offers an opportunity to explore another emotional dimension of the epic and bring greater attention to a character whose experiences are often less prominent in popular retellings.
Sonia has previously appeared in films including Tum Bin 2 and Baazaar. Her performance in The Kerala Story, in which she played a negative character, brought her wider recognition. Taking on Urmila marks a different kind of role in her film career.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari, Ramayana is planned as a two-part cinematic adaptation of the Indian epic, with Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role as Lord Rama.
