At least five people were killed and 27 others injured after a passenger bus plunged into a drain in Hafizabad district of Pakistan’s Punjab province on Thursday, prompting rescue teams to launch operations amid fears that more passengers could be trapped.
The accident occurred in the Fatehke area of Pindi Bhattian tehsil, where the bus reportedly veered off the road after its driver lost control of the vehicle due to overspeeding, according to Rescue 1122.
Rescue teams reached the site and began evacuating passengers. The injured received first aid at the scene, while 20 people were shifted to hospitals for further treatment. Search operations continued as rescuers checked whether anyone remained trapped beneath the bus or debris.
The incident comes days after another fatal bus accident in Punjab province. On October 21, 10 people were killed and 44 injured when a passenger bus overturned after hitting a road divider in the Bangla Hidayat area of Rojhan tehsil in Rajanpur district.
According to rescue authorities, the victims in that accident included seven men, two women and a girl. More than 38 injured passengers were taken to Rajanpur District Headquarters Hospital, while critically injured people were referred to hospitals in Dera Ghazi Khan and Rahim Yar Khan.
In a separate incident in August, two people were killed and 42 injured when a bus carrying a wedding party overturned on the Kohlu-Dera Ghazi Khan highway in Balochistan province. Police attributed that accident to overloading.
