Hollywood star Vin Diesel has shared a heartfelt memory of how his first paycheque as an actor helped fulfil a special wish for his mother: travelling to Europe for the first time.
In a social media post, Diesel recalled earning the money for his role as Private Adrian Caparzo in Steven Spielberg’s 1998 war film Saving Private Ryan. He said he used the payment to buy his mother a ticket to Europe after years of pursuing filmmaking without earning money from his earlier work.
“Paramount had just wrote my first check, as an actor,” Diesel wrote, reflecting on his journey from Brooklyn to Hollywood. He added that although he had attended the Cannes Film Festival and Sundance as a director, those experiences had not brought him a paycheck.
“With it I bought a ticket to Europe for my mother… her first,” he shared.
Diesel also connected Caparzo’s sacrifice in the film, in which the soldier dies while trying to help a child, to a lesson imparted by his mother.
“That’s who my mom is… her mantra. The best way to help yourself is to help other people,” he wrote.
The actor also mentioned several upcoming projects that his mother is looking forward to, including the finale of the Fast & Furious franchise, Riddick and Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em. He said she particularly appreciates antihero characters and understands the personal significance of some of his projects.
Looking back at his career, Diesel noted that the following year would mark 30 years since his association with Sundance. He ended the post by describing it as a letter to his mother, inspired by the letter his character never managed to send home.
“Hope to make you proud,” he wrote.
Diesel rose to international prominence through his portrayal of Dominic Toretto in the Fast & Furious franchise. Before becoming a major action star, he wrote, directed, produced and acted in the short film Multi-Facial and his feature directorial debut, Strays.
