Uttar Pradesh Congress President Aradhana ‘Mona’ Misra has described the latest Legislative Council election results as a “semi-final for 2027”, claiming the outcome reflected growing public dissatisfaction with the BJP government.
The Samajwadi Party (SP) won five of the 11 Legislative Council seats contested in the latest round of elections, while the BJP secured six. The BJP retained its previous tally, but the SP increased its strength by two seats.
The results in Varanasi drew particular attention, with the SP winning both the Teachers’ and Graduates’ constituencies in the Lok Sabha constituency represented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Misra said the outcome in Varanasi demonstrated opposition to the BJP, citing unemployment, job losses, inflation, law and order, farmers’ concerns and crimes against women as issues influencing voters.
“The Prime Minister’s Lok Sabha constituency is Varanasi, where the BJP has suffered a major defeat in the MLC elections. This is a mandate against the BJP,” she said.
Misra added that the results pointed to a broader political message ahead of the 2027 Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
SP spokesperson Fakhrul Hasan Chand also welcomed the outcome, arguing that the results showed the BJP faced difficulties in elections conducted through ballot papers. He alleged that the ruling party had attempted to influence the process at some places and delay voting.
Chand further claimed that efforts had been made to prevent the Varanasi results from being declared, but voters had made their choice clear. These allegations were not independently established in the source report.
Taking aim at the BJP’s response to the results, Chand said the party should explain its losses in Varanasi rather than focus on the Congress’ setbacks elsewhere. He described the outcome as an indication of the political mood ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls.
