Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has urged people, including student groups across political affiliations, to join the Congress-led INDIA bloc’s march at Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan on November 1, describing it as a campaign to protect democracy and the Constitution and oppose alleged vote theft.
In a video message in Hindi posted on X, Gandhi said the proposed march was not for any single political party but for the “soul of India”.
Appealing to people dissatisfied with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, he called on them to participate in what he described as a protest for the country.
Gandhi also sought to reassure prospective participants about possible police action, urging them not to be intimidated by the prospect of a lathi-charge. He alleged that democratic freedoms and the right to express opinions were under threat.
Addressing students in particular, the Congress leader urged groups irrespective of their political affiliations to join the march if they believed their ideas, expression and way of thinking were under attack.
The planned gathering is expected to serve as a show of strength for the INDIA bloc, which has accused the Election Commission of electoral irregularities. The allegations are contested, and Gandhi’s appeal forms part of the opposition’s wider campaign against what it calls “vote theft”.
Separately, opposition leaders are preparing to hold a mock Parliament at Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge’s residence on Friday. The proposed event is expected to include a symbolic “public impeachment” of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The November 1 march and the planned mock Parliament are part of the opposition’s ongoing political campaign focused on electoral accountability and the functioning of democratic institutions.
