The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Wednesday held a protest in Majitha against Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, burning his effigy and raising slogans over allegations surrounding the drug trade and financial transactions under investigation. AAP leaders Talbir Singh Gill and MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur criticised Majithia’s alleged political understanding with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), asserting that Punjab’s youth and future must not be put at risk by drug-related activities and political intimidation.
The protest came after the Punjab Police filed a chargesheet of more than 40,000 pages in the case involving alleged drug money worth Rs 736 crore linked to Majithia. AAP leaders said the chargesheet marked a significant step in the investigation and asserted that the Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government would not bow to political pressure. The allegations remain subject to judicial scrutiny.
Under the leadership of AAP Majitha constituency in-charge Talbir Singh Gill, party workers gathered in large numbers and raised slogans including “Chitte Da Vyaapaari Murdabad” and “Gangsters De Janamdata Nu Jail Bhejo”. The protesters burned an effigy of Majithia and demanded accountability for the damage they said the drug menace had inflicted on Punjab’s youth.
Addressing the media, Gill said the Mann government had demonstrated the resolve to pursue cases against influential political figures and allow the law to take its course.
“CM Bhagwant Singh Mann’s government has shown the courage to tighten the noose around drug traffickers. The law is doing its work with complete honesty, and the Punjab Police has filed a chargesheet running into more than 40,000 pages against Bikram Singh Majithia. The scale of the case and the financial transactions under investigation explain the extensive documentation placed before the court. Majithia must face the legal consequences of his actions, and the court will decide the matter on the basis of evidence,” Gill said.
Targeting the previous Congress government led by Captain Amarinder Singh, Gill alleged that meaningful action had not been taken against Majithia despite a report submitted by police officer Harpreet Singh Sidhu.
“During Captain Amarinder Singh’s tenure, no meaningful action was taken against Majithia despite the report submitted by honest officer Harpreet Singh Sidhu. The relationship between the political leadership of that time prevented decisive action. In contrast, the CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government has taken the matter to court without succumbing to political pressure,” he said.
Responding to Majithia’s statements, Gill said public claims and counterclaims could not replace scrutiny of the evidence and financial transactions detailed in the case.
“Bikram Singh Majithia is trying to divert public attention through claims and counterclaims, but the chargesheet, the official statements and the legal proceedings are there for everyone to examine. Making tall claims cannot erase the questions surrounding the financial transactions under investigation,” Gill said.
Taking a swipe at Majithia’s reported claim of being the “General of Majha”, Gill said the title did not establish anyone’s standing in the region. He invoked Baba Deep Singh Ji, saying the people of Majha understood the difference between those who upheld Punjab’s honour and those facing scrutiny in the drug case.
Gill also alleged that people in Majitha had faced an atmosphere of fear, intimidation and hooliganism for years. He claimed that residents were now more willing to speak out and predicted that voters would deliver a decisive verdict against the politics of drugs and intimidation in the coming elections.
Meanwhile, AAP MLA Jeevan Jyot Kaur criticised the reported political understanding between Majithia and the BJP, describing it as a threat to Punjab’s future. She said the filing of the chargesheet demonstrated that the Mann government intended to pursue the investigation through the legal process, irrespective of the political influence of those involved.
“The filing of a more than 40,000-page chargesheet against Bikram Singh Majithia demonstrates that the Bhagwant Mann government is determined to pursue the case through the legal process, regardless of the political influence of those involved. The investigation has brought Rs 736 crore in suspected drug money and financial transactions routed through various companies under scrutiny. The people of Punjab deserve answers about these transactions and the source and movement of the money,” Kaur said.
Kaur further claimed that while the Mann government had curbed the inflow of drugs from across the Pakistan border, supplies from Gujarat had become a serious concern. She alleged that Amit Shah and Majithia were working together with an eye on forming a government in Punjab, and warned that their political understanding could undermine efforts to tackle the drug menace.
“The BJP and Bikram Singh Majithia must answer for their political understanding and the direction in which they want to take Punjab. After the damage drugs have inflicted on our youth and families, the state cannot afford any politics that puts vested interests above the future of its people. Punjab must remain vigilant against every attempt to revive the drug menace,” she said.
Appealing to Punjabis to remain alert, Kaur said the state could not afford political decisions that jeopardised the future of its youth, peace and stability.
“The people must recognise the dangers posed by this alliance and reject any politics that threatens Punjab’s youth, peace and future. The CM Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government is committed to fighting drugs and ensuring that the law takes its course. Punjab will not allow its future to be compromised,” she added.
