Veteran actress Zeenat Aman has reflected on being labelled a “sex symbol” during her film career, saying the glamorous public image associated with her was quite different from her private personality.
In a recent Instagram post, the actress spoke about the gap between public perception and personal identity, describing herself as naturally private, somewhat introverted and happiest when immersed in her work.
“For much of my life in the public eye, I was labelled a sex symbol. It was an image that came with the territory, and one I understood to be part of the business of cinema,” Zeenat wrote.
She added that while she wholeheartedly embraced her work, the woman behind the camera-ready persona was, in many ways, the opposite of the image audiences associated with her.
Reflecting on how people form impressions of others, Zeenat said perceptions are often shaped by individual experiences, expectations and imagination. The same person, she noted, might appear mysterious to one individual, intimidating to another or become an unexpectedly candid companion to a stranger during a long flight.
“I’ve come to believe there is little point in correcting every impression. People are entitled to their perceptions, just as we are entitled to our truths. The two need not always coincide,” she wrote.
The actress encouraged people to understand themselves beyond labels, photographs, headlines and the stories others tell about them. She also invited her followers to share experiences of being misunderstood or misjudging someone else.
Zeenat’s distinctive screen image was shaped by films including Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971), Yaadon Ki Baaraat (1973) and Raj Kapoor’s Satyam Shivam Sundaram (1978). Her portrayal of Rupa in the latter, known for its bold visual presentation, further established her as one of Hindi cinema’s most unconventional screen personalities.
