India’s Anahat Singh continued her impressive run on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Tour, defeating England’s Saran Nghiem in four games to enter the quarterfinals of the Canadian Women’s Open in Toronto.
The 18-year-old Indian, ranked world No. 15, defeated world No. 52 Nghiem 11-6, 4-11, 11-5, 11-7 in the second round of the USD 103,750 PSA Silver-level tournament. The sixth seed had received a bye in the opening round.
Anahat started confidently, winning the opening game 11-6, but Nghiem fought back to claim the second 11-4 and level the match. The Indian regained control in the third game, taking it 11-5, before sealing the contest with an 11-7 win in the fourth.
The victory follows Anahat’s breakthrough performance at the Silicon Valley Open last week, where she reached the semifinals of a PSA Gold-level event for the first time. Her run in the United States ended with a four-game defeat against Malaysia’s Sivasangari Subramaniam.
The reigning world junior champion now faces a challenging quarterfinal against Egypt’s Fayrouz Aboelkheir, the world No. 7 and top seed at the Canadian Open. Anahat will look to build on her recent performances and secure another notable result against a higher-ranked opponent.
Her consecutive deep runs at tournaments in the United States and Canada mark an encouraging stretch on the professional circuit, providing valuable experience against established international players.
Meanwhile, India’s Veer Chotrani bowed out of the men’s competition at the PSA Silver-level Canada Cup, also being held in Toronto. The world No. 36 lost 7-11, 7-11, 6-11 to England’s Mohamed ElShorbagy in the second round.
Chotrani had advanced after defeating Japan’s Ryunosuke Tsukue in straight games but was unable to overcome the experienced English opponent.
With Anahat through to the last eight, attention will now turn to her quarterfinal clash against Aboelkheir as the Indian continues her campaign in Canada.
