Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on his re-election, expressing confidence that India and Brazil would further strengthen their strategic partnership and expand cooperation across key sectors.
In a message posted on X, Modi described Lula’s victory as “remarkable” and said he looked forward to working closely with the Brazilian leader to deepen bilateral ties.
The Prime Minister said both countries would continue to cooperate across diverse sectors, advance the shared priorities of the Global South and work towards a more inclusive, equitable and sustainable world.
Lula secured a fourth term as Brazil’s President after defeating Liberal Party candidate Flávio Bolsonaro in Sunday’s presidential runoff. According to the official tally cited in the report, Lula received 51.78 per cent of the valid votes, against 48.23 per cent for Bolsonaro, with 99.89 per cent of votes counted.
The result marked a comeback for Lula, who had trailed in the first round of voting. He is set to govern Brazil from 2027 to 2030, with challenges including managing public debt and navigating a Congress in which Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party has a strong presence.
Modi and Lula last met in February during the Brazilian President’s state visit to India. Their discussions covered critical minerals, digital cooperation, traditional knowledge, healthcare, micro, small and medium enterprises, entrepreneurship and mass communication.
Lula also participated in the second AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi. He had skipped the 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in September amid his re-election campaign.
Lula is scheduled to be sworn in for his new four-year term on January 5, 2027.
