Yemen’s Houthi forces on Thursday claimed they had launched a rescue operation after Saudi Arabia allegedly targeted an Indian yacht carrying 14 Indian nationals near Zuqar Island in the southern Red Sea.
Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Saree said the claim was based on preliminary information and that the Yemeni Armed Forces would provide further details later.
“The Saudi enemy is targeting an Indian yacht near Zuqar Island, carrying 14 people of Indian nationality, according to preliminary information. The Yemeni Armed Forces are rescuing them and will provide more details later,” Saree said in a post on X.
He alleged that the incident threatened international navigation in the Red Sea and called on the international community to intervene to stop what he described as reckless Saudi actions. The claim had not been independently confirmed in the information available.
The development came a day after an Indian national was among two people killed in an attack on King Fahd International Airport in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, on Wednesday night. Two other Indian nationals were injured, according to the Indian Embassy in Riyadh.
“Saudi authorities have informed that one Indian national was among two people who unfortunately lost their lives in the attack on Dammam airport yesterday night and two Indian nationals were injured,” the embassy said in a post on X.
The embassy added that it was ascertaining further details and contacting the affected families. It also expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
India on Thursday condemned continued attacks on civilian and energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, including the incident at King Fahd International Airport and an attack on Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah oil field in the Eastern Province on October 21.
In a statement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said the attacks had resulted in civilian deaths and injuries and called for an immediate end to strikes on civilian and critical infrastructure.
“We also reiterate that the attacks on civilian and critical infrastructure are completely unacceptable and must cease immediately,” the MEA said, reaffirming India’s solidarity with Saudi Arabia in safeguarding its sovereignty.
India also expressed hope that peace and normalcy would return to the region at the earliest.
Meanwhile, the Houthis have accused Saudi forces of carrying out air and missile strikes across Yemeni provinces during the week.
