West Bengal Police have seized a car carrying explosives and gunpowder from Jessore Road in the Duttapukur area of North 24 Parganas district, detaining its alleged owner for questioning as multiple agencies investigate the recovery.
The vehicle was seized late Wednesday night. Investigators have identified the owner as Rakibul Islam, who has denied owning the explosives-laden car, according to information from the investigation.
The seriousness of the recovery prompted the deployment of the state police’s Special Task Force (STF), the National Investigation Agency (NIA), the Bomb Disposal Squad and the National Security Guard’s state unit. NSG personnel had cordoned off the site, according to the latest information available.
The explosives have been sent for forensic examination. Investigators are trying to establish the vehicle’s intended destination and determine where the material was being transported during the festive season. Preliminary information suggests that the car was heading towards Kolkata.
The recovery site is reportedly close to the India-Bangladesh border, prompting investigators to examine possible cross-border links. However, no such connection has been established so far.
Police have also searched Islam’s residence and questioned his family members. Two mobile phones and a laptop belonging to him have been confiscated for examination to determine whether they contain clues relevant to the case.
The seizure, which took place on the night of Vijaya Dashami, triggered concern in the locality.
State Panchayat Affairs and Rural Development Minister Dilip Ghosh alleged that explosives had moved freely in the state under the previous Trinamool Congress government. He said action was now being taken against those involved in such activities.
The investigation is continuing, and the origin, intended destination and ownership of the recovered explosives remain under scrutiny.
