Sovima, October 19, 2026 (Yes Punjab News)

Mizoram batter Chinmay Sutar on Monday became only the second Indian batter to score a quadruple century in first-class cricket, smashing an unbeaten 400 against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate Group match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima.

Playing only his second first-class match, the left-handed batter surpassed Prithvi Shaw’s 379 to register the second-highest individual score in Ranji Trophy history. Only Bhausaheb Nimbalkar’s unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in Pune during the 1948-49 season remains ahead of Sutar’s effort.

Sutar, who was batting on 392 at the tea break, reached the 400-run milestone in the 155th over. Mizoram subsequently declared their innings at 581/9. Sutar faced 517 balls, striking 46 fours and seven sixes.

He was on 231 when last batter Lalrempuia Chhakchhuak joined him at the crease. The pair went on to add an unbeaten 190 runs for the 10th wicket, helping Mizoram recover from a precarious position and build a commanding total.

Mizoram had finished the opening day at 331/5 but slipped to 391/9 on the second day before Sutar and Lalrempuia turned the innings around. Their stand also became the third-highest last-wicket partnership in Ranji Trophy history, falling 43 runs short of the record 233-run partnership between Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh for Delhi against Mumbai in the 1991-92 season.

Sutar became only the 10th batter to score 400 or more runs in a first-class innings, joining an elite group that includes cricketing greats Brian Lara and Don Bradman.

Lara holds the record for the highest individual score in first-class cricket, having scored an unbeaten 501 for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994. He also scored 400 not out for the West Indies against England in a Test match in 2004. Pakistan’s Hanif Mohammad came close to the 500-run mark, scoring 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1959.

Sutar made his Ranji Trophy debut for Mizoram in the previous week’s season opener against Manipur after obtaining a no-objection certificate from the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA).

He scored 35 in the first innings and 99 in the second, being run out just one run short of a century. Mizoram recovered from a 68-run first-innings deficit but eventually lost the match by three wickets.

Before joining Mizoram, Sutar had represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy during the previous domestic season, following strong performances in Mumbai’s local cricket leagues.

In June, he helped MSC Maratha Royals defend their Mumbai T20 League title, scoring half-centuries in consecutive matches. He finished the tournament with 212 runs from six innings at a strike rate of nearly 120.
