The Rajasthan Drug Control Department has seized medicines estimated to be worth around Rs 5 crore from a dry well in Khatnawali village of Bayana tehsil in Bharatpur district, officials said on Wednesday.
The action followed a tip-off, after which a team of Drug Control Officers led by the Assistant Drug Controller, Bharatpur, conducted a search with the assistance of local police and villagers.
Officials recovered around 274 cartons of medicines from the dry well and seized the stock as per prescribed regulations. The medicines were primarily those used in the treatment of heart disease, diabetes and allergies.
The recovered stock included Losar-50, Janumet, Ketorol-M, Allegra-M and Jalra.
Principal Secretary (Medical and Health) Gayatri Rathore said the seizure raised serious concerns and that the authorities were examining the origin and authenticity of the medicines.
Drug Control Commissioner Avichal Chaturvedi said concealing such a large quantity of medicines in a dry well appeared to be a serious and suspicious matter.
A detailed investigation is underway to verify the medicines’ authenticity and quality, batch numbers, manufacturing and expiry dates, source and supply chain, including their manufacturer.
Officials are also examining whether expired medicines were illegally removed or stolen from a manufacturer, depot or carrying and forwarding (C&F) agent and subsequently concealed with the intention of altering expiry dates and reintroducing them into the market.
Drug Control Officer (Bharatpur) Komudi Singh collected 10 samples from the site for laboratory testing.
The department has initiated legal proceedings and is taking steps to register an FIR against those allegedly involved. Drug Controller Ajay Phatak said the investigation would cover the manufacturers, supply chain and establishments linked to the recovered medicines.
Information about the seizure has also been shared with the Drug Controller, Uttar Pradesh, Drug Inspector, Agra, and the concerned pharmaceutical manufacturers.
As part of the follow-up action, officials seized related medicines in Agra and an FIR was registered at Malpura Police Station in Agra.
The department is obtaining distribution and supply records and conducting batch-wise verification with the manufacturers. Officials said strict action would follow if the investigation and laboratory tests establish that the medicines were spurious, adulterated, tampered with or intended for illegal sale.
