Veteran actor Aanjjan Srivastav broke down in tears while remembering his longtime friend and fellow actor Mushtaq Khan at his prayer meet in Mumbai on September 30.
The gathering was attended by several members of the Hindi film industry, who came together to pay their respects to Mushtaq, who died on September 24 while undergoing treatment for cancer.
A visibly emotional Aanjjan spoke about his decades-long association with Mushtaq and recalled the close bond they shared beyond their professional collaborations.
“We worked together for so many years. There was such a family relationship between us. That is why my wife has also come. We would also eat and spend time together, he was like family,” Aanjjan said at the prayer meet.
“Now, he has gone very far. He has left us very soon,” he added, visibly struggling to hold back tears.
Aanjjan and Mushtaq had shared screen space in several films over the years, including Sazaye Maut (1981), Chamatkar (1992), Jazbaat (1994), Akele Hum Akele Tum (1995) and Ek Aur Visphot (2002).
The two actors also worked together on the original television series Wagle Ki Duniya, in which Aanjjan played the iconic character Srinivas Wagle while Mushtaq appeared as Manohar.
Aanjjan, born on June 2, 1948, has enjoyed a career spanning Hindi cinema, television and theatre. He became widely known for playing the middle-class common man Srinivas Wagle and later reprised the role in Wagle Ki Duniya – Nayi Peedhi Naye Kissey.
His film credits include Gol Maal, Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala, Khuda Gawah, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Pukar, Chak De! India and Yuvvraaj, among others.
Mushtaq was a familiar face in Hindi cinema, particularly in supporting and comic roles, across a career spanning several decades. His credits included Aashiqui, Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Hera Pheri, Jodi No. 1, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha and Welcome.
His portrayal of Ballu, the disabled hockey player in Welcome, was among his memorable performances.
Mushtaq died in Mumbai on September 24 while undergoing cancer treatment. He was laid to rest in the city on September 25.
