The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), Chandigarh, has secured the conviction of two drug traffickers in a 2019 case involving the interstate trafficking of opium poppy straw, with a Special NDPS Court in Hoshiarpur sentencing both to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment.
According to an NCB statement issued on Wednesday, Muzaffar Ahmad Mir of Jammu and Kashmir and Charanjit Singh Cheema of Hoshiarpur were each sentenced to 11 years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs 2 lakh.
The case dates back to June 26, 2019, when an NCB Chandigarh team intercepted a truck near Mukerian and foiled an alleged attempt to transport 500 kg of opium poppy straw from Jammu and Kashmir to Punjab.
The contraband was concealed in 20 sacks and hidden beneath scrap material loaded in the truck, bearing registration number JK-13-B 7759.
The seizure resulted in the arrest of Mir, Cheema and another accused identified as Sheikh.
Sheikh subsequently jumped bail and absconded. During the trial, the court declared him a proclaimed offender in December 2025. The NCB said efforts were continuing to apprehend him.
The agency said the conviction reflected its efforts to strengthen investigations and prosecution in cases involving interstate drug trafficking.
The latest conviction comes days after the NCB reported another major conviction in a narcotics case in Uttar Pradesh.
On September 26, the agency said a Special NDPS Court had sentenced nine drug traffickers to rigorous imprisonment ranging from 10 to 20 years in connection with the seizure of 441 kg of ganja in Firozabad in 2021.
In that case, the ganja was concealed in a specially created cavity in the driver’s cabin of a truck. The NCB said the consignment had originated in Gajapati, Odisha, and was allegedly being transported to Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh.
The case was subsequently taken over by the NCB for further investigation, during which seven additional accused persons were arrested, the agency said.
