Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar on Wednesday criticised the V.D. Satheesan-led state government over alleged security lapses during the visits of Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Vice-President C.P. Radhakrishnan, warning that such incidents could have implications for Centre-state relations.

Chandrasekhar said the BJP had offered to cooperate with the new state government from the day Satheesan assumed office, with the objective of supporting Kerala’s welfare and development.

He also said the Centre had conveyed during Shah’s visit to Kerala last week that it was ready to extend all possible assistance to the state.

Referring to the Youth Congress black-flag protest during Shah’s visit to Kollam on September 26, Chandrasekhar said the incident raised serious security concerns. The BJP has described the episode as a major security lapse, while the Kerala Police has said there was no breach, stating that the convoy was not obstructed and that the protesters were removed before it reached the area.

“See what happened in Kollam when Union Minister Amit Shah was in the state and two Kerala Ministers were present,” Chandrasekhar said.

He also referred to another security-related incident during Vice-President Radhakrishnan’s visit to Thiruvananthapuram on September 27. The Vice-President had visited Kerala that day for programmes in Kollam and Thiruvananthapuram, according to the Vice-President’s Secretariat.

Chandrasekhar said the incidents could not be treated lightly and alleged that a state minister was responsible for the breach, without naming the minister.

He said the BJP would take up the matter with the state government, stressing that the issue went beyond the political differences between the BJP and the Congress-led government.

“Any lapse in the security of senior constitutional authorities is a serious matter,” Chandrasekhar said.

He maintained that the BJP’s offer to cooperate with the state government on Kerala’s development remained unchanged, but said the state government also had a responsibility to ensure adequate security arrangements for visiting constitutional authorities.

The comments come amid a political dispute between the BJP and the state government over the Youth Congress protest during Shah’s Kollam visit. BJP leaders have alleged inadequate security and intelligence failures, while the police have rejected the claim of a security breach.

Chandrasekhar said the BJP would continue to raise the issue and seek accountability for what it described as security lapses.
