Indian compound archer Ganesh Mani Ratnam Thirumuru won the men’s individual bronze medal at the Asian Games on Thursday, taking India’s archery tally at the Aichi-Nagoya Games to four medals.

Ganesh defeated Vietnam’s Cong Duc Dang 149-144 in the bronze-medal contest at the Okazaki Chuo Sogo Park Multipurpose Square.

The Indian produced a strong finish, hitting 14 10s and closing with three successive 10s to pull away from his Vietnamese opponent and secure third place.

The medal is Ganesh’s second at the ongoing Games after he helped India win gold in the men’s team compound event on Wednesday.

India finished the compound archery competition with three gold medals in the team events and one bronze in the individual competitions.

Earlier on Thursday, Chikitha Taniparthi narrowly missed out on a medal in the women’s compound individual event after losing 144-143 to Indonesia’s Nurisa Dian Ashrifah in the quarterfinals.

Chikitha trailed after the first two ends but recovered to move ahead in the third. However, she managed an 8, 9 and 10 in the final end, while Nurisa responded with 10, 10 and 9 to edge the contest.

The individual compound events were the only two disciplines at Aichi-Nagoya where India could not defend the gold medals won at Hangzhou 2023, where Indian compound archers swept all five gold medals.

Chikitha had already won two gold medals in Nagoya. She was part of India’s victorious women’s team and later teamed up with Sahil Jadhav to win the mixed team title, a result that also secured India a quota place for the compound mixed team event at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The women’s team of Chikitha, Prithika Pradeep and Jyothi Surekha Vennam defeated China 238-234 to successfully defend its Asian Games title. India had won silver in the event in 2018 and bronze in 2014.

Chikitha and Sahil then defeated South Korea’s Park Jungyoon and Choi Yonghee in a shoot-off after the mixed team final ended 157-157.

Sahil also won his second gold in the men’s team event alongside Kushal Dalal and Ganesh, with the Indian trio overcoming China after a comeback victory.

At Hangzhou 2023, Indian archers won a record nine medals — five gold, two silver and two bronze — with the compound archers claiming all five gold medals on offer.
