The Union Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all mandated Rabi crops for the 2027-28 marketing season, with safflower receiving the highest hike of Rs 675 per quintal.
According to an official statement, the MSP for rapeseed and mustard has been increased by Rs 413 per quintal, while lentil (masur) will see a rise of Rs 390 per quintal. The MSP for barley has been raised by Rs 136 per quintal, gram by Rs 83 per quintal and wheat by Rs 25 per quintal.
The government said the revised MSP rates aim to ensure remunerative prices for farmers and are in line with the Union Budget 2018-19 announcement to fix MSP at a minimum of 1.5 times the All-India weighted average cost of production.
The Centre has also been promoting the cultivation of pulses and oilseeds by offering higher MSPs to encourage farmers to diversify beyond cereal crops.
The statement highlighted an increase in procurement and payments to farmers over the past decade. Wheat procurement during 2014-15 to 2025-26 stood at 3,715 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), compared with 2,254 LMT between 2004-05 and 2013-14.
Procurement of six Rabi crops during 2014-15 to 2025-26 reached 3,921 LMT, against 2,302 LMT in the preceding decade.
The MSP amount paid to wheat farmers during 2014-15 to 2025-26 rose to Rs 7.31 lakh crore, compared with Rs 2.56 lakh crore between 2004-05 and 2013-14. Payments for the six Rabi crops increased to Rs 8.36 lakh crore from Rs 2.65 lakh crore over the corresponding periods.
