West Indies batter Amir Jangoo credited nine years of first-class cricket for giving him the foundation to succeed at international level after his second ODI century helped the visitors post a record 405/7 against India in the second ODI here on Wednesday.
Jangoo came to the crease after John Campbell was dismissed for 101 and accelerated from 59 off 54 balls to his second ODI hundred in just 70 deliveries. He eventually scored 114 off 77 balls, striking 13 fours and three sixes before being caught at backward point off Ravindra Jadeja.
“For me it’s just hard work. There’s a lot of lessons and failures in between there. As I said, I played nine years of first-class cricket before starting international cricket. So the foundation was there. So for me it was all about learning,” Jangoo said during a mid-innings interaction with broadcasters.
“As I told you this morning, it’s all about learning as fast as possible. So it’s all about enjoying international cricket now and just going out there and play free,” he added.
Jangoo was particularly effective against India spinner Kuldeep Yadav, whom he attacked positively through the innings. Asked about his approach against spin, he said the team had backed his ability in that department.
“To be fair, we had our discussions. Well, first of all, that’s a very big comparison (on comparing his spin play to the legendary Brian Lara). But, for me, I’m a pretty good player of spin, and the team believes in my ability,” he said.
Jangoo said the plan was to be positive against the spinners while keeping the batting approach straightforward.
“When spinners were bowling, they always told me, ‘Go out there, dominate,’ and we had our team discussions, and for me it was all about batting most of him and trying to bat him positively as well,” he said.
He repeatedly found the off-side gaps against Kuldeep, Naman Dhir and Jadeja, while his 182-run partnership with captain Shai Hope helped West Indies take control of the innings.
Hope scored 104 off 94 balls as West Indies reached 405/7 — their highest-ever ODI total — with three batters completing centuries in the innings.
Jangoo said the performance reflected the team’s response after identifying areas that went wrong in the opening ODI.
“It’s an amazing feeling. The boys went out there today with our game plan. We know where we went wrong in the first game, and luckily enough we executed,” he said.
He credited Campbell for providing a strong start and Hope for carrying the innings forward before explaining how he approached his own role.
“So for me it was to just go out there and execute, and we did that. To be fair, it’s whatever role the team has for me,” Jangoo said.
He revealed that he learned only on Wednesday that he would bat at No. 4 after the team decided to move everyone up one position.
“I pride myself on learning the scenarios and making sure that I can execute on the day. So luckily enough it paid off,” he added.
